Why study Chemistry?
Chemistry helps you to understand the world around you and many aspects of our lives are influenced by this central science. It is fundamental to the food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear, in medicines, fuels and the manufacture of modern materials.
The Chemistry department at Inverness Royal Academy pride ourselves on offering our students an excellent education and our superb SQA results show that pupils are motivated to learn and achieve.
Our Courses
We have worked very hard to produce up-to-date materials for all the National courses which are all backed up with regular homework and assessments. This allows you to check your understanding and allows us to monitor your progress and check that you are on target for achieving your full potential.
S3/4: National 4 & 5 Chemistry
The course is practical and experiential, developing skills in a chemical context. Through a variety of real-life contexts, learners will acquire and apply knowledge and understanding of chemical concepts, and develop this through an application-led approach, including practical activities.
As well as developing specific scientific skills, in areas such as experimentation and investigation, learners will also gain valuable transferable skills, for learning, life and work, such as literacy, numeracy and communication.
The course consists of 3 units:
- Chemical changes and structure
- Nature’s chemistry
- Chemistry in society
S5/6: Higher Chemistry & Advanced Higher Chemistry
Higher Chemistry
The Higher Chemistry Course develops learners’ curiosity, interest and enthusiasm for chemistry in a range of contexts. The skills of scientific inquiry and investigation are developed throughout the Course, and the relevance of Chemistry is highlighted by the study of the applications of Chemistry in everyday contexts.
The course consists of four units:
- Chemical Changes and Structure
- Nature’s Chemistry
- Chemistry in Society
- Researching Chemistry
Advanced Higher Chemistry
The course follows on from Higher Chemistry. It increases both the breadth and depth of students’ chemical knowledge and practical abilities. It is equivalent to a Chemistry A-Level and contains much material that will be covered in a first year university course. It is therefore very useful for students planning a chemical, biological, medical or veterinarian course at University. It is also essential for students planning to enter University at second year level.
The course consists of four units:
- Inorganic chemistry
- Physical chemistry
- Organic chemistry and instrumental analysis
- Researching chemistry

The department has an open-door policy and welcomes any pupil who needs any extra help and support. Come to our Monday after-school revision group for our National 4 and 5 Chemistry pupils.
