Science
Staff:
There are 10 members of teaching staff in the science department from the following disciplines Physics (3), Biology (4) and Chemistry (4). Together they have nearly 200 years of teaching experience and come from a variety of backgrounds bringing a wealth of knowledge and skills to the courses.
The course
Pupils in S1 & S2 study science across all disciplines (Physics, Chemistry & Biology). The course consists of various topics, each with a theme. An example of this is Sport which looks at aspects of the biology of the human body and then some of the physics related to sport. Other topics are
- Getting Started
- Home
- Building Blocks
- Health
- Materials
- Life
Pupils are exposed to a wide range of learning activities including experimental design, scientific research, groupwork and communication through a variety of media.
Progression
As pupils progress through this part of the Broad General Education(BGE) they can expect to develop their knowledge and understanding, problem solving and research skills as well as the ability to communicate scientific ideas in a variety of ways. These skills form a foundation and are essential in the progression to the National qualifications and beyond.
Homework & Assessment
Homework is given on a regular basis and completion on time is important and expected. Formal assessment occurs at the end of each topic and in S2 pupils are examined on all parts of the course covered such that a judgement can be made as to the likely route taken following the BGE.
